The Vasa, named after the Swedish royal dynasty, was commissioned in 1625 under King Gustav II Adolf as the flagship of the Baltic fleet. With a length of 69 meters and equipped with 72 guns, she was one of the most imposing warships of her time. More than 700 gilded sculptures adorned the magnificent ship. Tragically, the Vasa sank on its maiden voyage on 10 August 1628 in Stockholm harbour. After 333 years, it was recovered and can now be admired in the Vasa Museum in Stockholm.
