William Lendrum "Billy" Mitchell was initially a major general in the U.S. Army, but after his retirement in 1926, was instrumental in driving the expansion of the American Air Force until 1936. The twin-engine, medium-weight B-25J bomber was named after him. The B-25 bombers saw service in World War II beginning in 1940 and were used by several factions.
